    CARLTON GOES TO STATE

On March 13, 2007 the sectional WYSE (worldwide youth in science and engineering) competition was held at SIU Lawson Hall.  Corbin Carlton, from Goreville High School placed 1st in computer science out of 26 finalists from Mt. Vernon to Cairo.  This entitles Corbin to advance to the state finals in Champaign Urbana on April 19, 2007, where he will be competing against other advancing high school students from all over the state.  If he places at the state level, Corbin will receive statewide recognition and an opportunity to participate in the national competition.

The worldwide youth in science and engineering competition is sponsored by the University of Illinois and is held throughout the state each year.  Students from virtually all Illinois high schools compete in regional, sectional, and statewide competitions.  The competition consists of subject exams in Math, English, Chemistry, Computer Fundamentals, Engineering Graphics, Physics, and Biology.

Corbin is one of only 4 students to advance individually from Goreville in the past 10 years.  We are very proud of Corbin here at Goreville High School and wish him all the best at his competition on April 19!!!!

    BLACKCAT SCHOLARS END SEASON

On March 8, 2007, the Regional Office of Education #2 sponsored its annual High School Scholar Bowl Tournament at Shawnee College. Out of the ten teams in the ROE region that participated, the Goreville Blackcat team took 4th place.  In the first round, the Cats played Egyptian.  It was a highly competitive match which ended in a tie and went into overtime.  The first team to answer two tossup questions in scholar bowl overtime is the winner.  Our blackcats defeated Egyptian in overtime, 155/135.  In the second round, the Cats faced Meridian.  They defeated the Bobcats 180/90.  This victory put Goreville in the semi-finals against Cobden in which the Blackcats were defeated 125/85.  Cobden went on to win the tournament.  In the finals, the blackcats played Egyptian again for 3rd place.  The match again was very close, but Egyptian pulled away in the end 155/125 to give the Cats a 4th place finish to end the season.  The high point scorers in the tournament were Corbin Carlton 13 (MVP), Eden Morrison 7, Jamie Hall 2, Colton Childers 1 and Caleb Phalin 1.

We are very proud of our Blackcat Scholar Bowl Team!!!!
